Monumental Inscriptions (MIs) marked * have been retyped (with possible corrections). Those marked ** have been updated.
A number of publications from other sources are also listed, particularly from such important publishers as the Federation of Family History Societies, the Society of Genealogists, Phillimore, Chapman and Gandy. It is impossible for us to reproduce the extensive lists from those publishers, but BMSGH can and will obtain and supply any of their publications in print on request.
Newcomers to the field should note particularly that, in common with most other UK societies, we produce an increasing number of our publications in microfiche format rather than in print. This is due to the economics of publishing for family history, where long print runs for local material are seldom required and short print runs are prohibitively expensive.
Each of the Society's publications is clearly marked to show whether it is produced in print or in microfiche. If you do not own a microfiche reader of your own you can usually obtain the use of one at your local library.
Each of the county lists which follow show the publications which apply to the county as a whole under the "County" heading, then lists transcriptions of parish registers, censuses, monumental inscriptions, photographs and other material of local interest under the "Parishes......." heading. It should be noted that some of the parishes listed (especially in the case of Monumental Inscriptions) are "new" parishes (since 1832!) and may not be listed in standard reference works for genealogists.
Any transcription marked (SPRS) was first produced by the Staffordshire Parish Register Society.BMSGH now prints new volumes on behalf of that Society, and is reproducing all of the old SPRS volumes in microfiche format.
It must be appreciated that the accuracy of the transcriptions cannot be guaranteed in view of the problems which arise in dealing with old documents and old gravestones, and various possible interpretations of the information which they contain. We can only repeat the often given advice "These are finding aids. When you find something you are looking for CHECK THE ORIGINAL."
